PENCILS

This is it! Each enlarged layout is taped to the back of a sheet of bristol board, and the final line art rendering is done on a lightbox. Here we can just focus on the actual line art, because we have already done all of the figure work, perspective, composition, etc.

Compare the layout to the finished pencils!

These final pencil images were made from reduced photocopies of the actual pencils. The thick black notes on these pages are my balloon placements ( I fax these over to DC to share with them how I've accomodated all the dialog and captions in the art). Thus, a lot of the nice detail and smooth appearance of the actual pencils is replaced with the choppy blacks of a photocopy.

By the way, a hint to all you pencillers out there. Sometimes the bristol boards are smoother than usual, feeling kind of "waxy" and not taking the lead as you are accustomed to (sometimes actually "squeaking!"). I found that scrubbing the entire blank page with a soft eraser helps minimize the "waxy" feel of these boards. Also, be aware that humidity can affect the boards too. I always run a blow dryer over each blank sheet just before drawing on it , to eliminate any moisture that may be in the paper fiber. Hope that helps!
